While many garage doors today are already automated, some are not, and if you have one of these doors at home, you may want to carry out modifications. Is it possible to automate an existing door, or do you have to buy a brand-new one that is already equipped?
Life Without Automation
It's hard to overstate the advantages of automatic doors. They can make life a lot easier when you are in a rush, as you will simply jump into your car, operate the remote control and close everything from afar while you drive down the road. You can also avoid getting wet on those days when you return from work in a monsoon. You will simply wait for the door to remotely open and drive in without getting an unwanted bath.
Adding Automation
The good news is that you can fit automation to your existing sectional, roller or up-and-over garage door, depending on its current condition. It will need to be in good shape and able to maintain its structural strength, which means that the hinges have to be in full working order and ideally without too much surface corrosion.
Assessing Condition
Check to see if the horizontal sections that roll up or down meet each other squarely during operation and do not overlap. In addition, the styles (vertical structures that form the frame) should maintain adequate support when the door is rolling. You must also ensure that the track is still intact so the nylon or steel rollers can move smoothly at all times.
Adding the Infrastructure
If everything looks in good condition, it should be possible to add the motorised drive to the garage ceiling and at the end of the chain track. The installer will need to be able to run wires to the system from the wall-mounted switch and connect everything to an electrical circuit.
Safety First
You may also want to install safety mechanisms, such as photocells mounted near the bottom of the track. These will detect an obstacle (such as a pet or small child) and automatically reverse the direction of the moving door if needed. After all, you cannot be too safe in these situations.
